Birthplace of the Buddha

A UNESCO World Heritage site on the plains, and one of the four great Buddhist pilgrimage places.

The region

Lumbini sits on the Terai plains near the Indian border, and it is where Siddhartha Gautam was born in 623 BC — making it one of the four great pilgrimage sites of Buddhism. The Mayadevi Temple marks the spot, beside the Puskarani pond where tradition holds the infant took his first bath, and the Ashoka Pillar erected in 249 BC records the emperor's visit.

Around the sacred garden, a monastic zone laid out to a master plan holds monasteries built by Buddhist nations from around the world — Thai, Burmese, Chinese, German, Vietnamese — each in its own architectural tradition. Walking between them is an unusual survey of how one religion is expressed across a continent.

It is flat, hot and quiet, and it pairs naturally with a Chitwan safari; many travellers combine the two on the way between Kathmandu and Pokhara.
