Into the Sanctuary — ringed by 7,000 m walls

Trip overview

The journey

The Annapurna Sanctuary trek climbs through some of Nepal's loveliest middle-hill country — stone-staired Gurung villages, bamboo and rhododendron forest — before slipping through a narrow gorge gateway into a natural amphitheatre walled by Annapurna I, Machapuchare and Hiunchuli. Base Camp at 4,130 m sits at its centre, with sunrise lighting the entire cirque.

Altitudes are gentler than the Everest region and access from Pokhara is quick, making this the finest choice for a first Himalayan trek that still ends somewhere truly dramatic.

Trip highlights

  • Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m) inside the Sanctuary
  • Machapuchare — the fishtail peak — at close range
  • Gurung villages of Ghandruk and Chhomrong
  • Natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda
  • Rhododendron and bamboo forest trails
  • Lakeside finish in Pokhara
