Bhutan's classic high trail, lakes and all

Trip overview

The journey

The Druk Path crosses the mountain ridge between Bhutan's two main valleys — Paro and Thimphu — through blue-pine forest, past a chain of sacred alpine lakes, and beneath the walls of centuries-old hermitages. It is Bhutan's classic trek: high enough for real mountain views (Gangkar Puensum, the world's highest unclimbed peak, on a clear day), short enough to combine with the kingdom's cultural circuit, and fully supported by a camping crew.

Trip highlights

  • Sacred alpine lakes — Jimilang Tsho and Simkotra Tsho
  • Gangkar Puensum views on clear days
  • Phajoding monastery above Thimphu
  • Full-service camping with crew and cook
  • Blue-pine and rhododendron ridge walking
  • Tiger's Nest hike to finish
