Behind the Himalaya, into the walled city of Lo

Trip overview

The journey

Upper Mustang is Nepal's high-desert kingdom behind the Himalayan rain shadow — a landscape of wind-carved ochre cliffs, sky caves and walled villages that stayed closed to the world until 1992. Our overland route follows the old salt road up the Kali Gandaki to Lo Manthang, the walled capital, with time in its monasteries and among the cave shrines of Chhoser.

Because it sits in the rain shadow, Mustang is the great monsoon journey — at its best when the rest of Nepal is under cloud.

Trip highlights

  • Lo Manthang — the walled capital of the Kingdom of Lo
  • Sky caves of Chhoser and early Buddhist murals
  • The Kali Gandaki — deepest gorge on earth
  • Kagbeni's medieval lanes
  • Travels well in the monsoon
  • 4WD support — trek or ride each stage
