Trip overview

The journey

The overland journey from Lhasa to Kathmandu is Asia's great high road: the Potala Palace and the pilgrim circuits of the Jokhang, turquoise Yamdrok Lake, the monastic cities of Gyantse and Shigatse, and finally Rongbuk — the highest monastery on earth — facing the full north wall of Everest. Altitude is gained sensibly with two nights in Lhasa before the road climbs.

Tibet travel permits are arranged by us and require about three weeks' lead time.
