The journey

Tiji Festival 2027 is scheduled to be celebrated from June 1 to June 3, 2027. This vibrant three-day ritual takes place in the ancient walled capital city of Lo Manthang, Upper Mustang, Nepal, featuring sacred masked dances that symbolize the triumph of good over evil.

Trip highlights

  • Day 1 (June 1): Performance of Tsa Chham (introductory dances by monks in brocade robes and masks).
  • Day 2 (June 2): Performance of Nga Chham (dances depicting the battle against the demon).
  • Day 3 (June 3): Performance of Rha Chham (the final climax featuring the destruction of a black effigy representing the demon).

Day 1

Arrive Kathmandu (1,400 m). Transfer to hotel. Rest, permit briefing with agency, gear check. Optional light sightseeing.

    Day 2

    Drive to Pokhara (820 m, 25 min flight). Lakeside evening.

      Day 3

      Drive to Kagbeni (2,800–2,850 m via Beni, Tatopani (hot springs), Kalopani, Marpha (apple village), Jomsom. Scenic Kali Gandaki valley (one of the world’s deepest gorges).

        Overnight: Hotel in Kagbeni (gateway, permit checks start here).Meals: B, L & D

        Day 4

        Drive to Ghami / Ghiling area (3,500–3,600 m) via Chele, Syangboche, Chungsi Cave (Guru Rinpoche site). Enter restricted Upper Mustang. Dramatic cliffs, canyons, Tibetan-style villages.

          Overnight: Overnight Guest House/Lodge in GhamiMeals: B, L & D

          Day 5

          Drive to Tsarang/Charang (3,560 m) to Lo Manthang (3,840 m). Pass red cliffs of Dhakmar, Ghar Gompa (ancient monastery), long mani walls, and Lo La views. Arrive Lo Manthang by afternoon/evening. Explore the walled city walls and settle in.

            Day 6

            Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang. Day 1 (Tsa Chham): Opening rituals, giant thangka unfurling, initial masked dances.

              Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang. Day 2 (Nga Chham): More intense dances and story progression.

                Day 8

                Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang. Day 3 (Rha Chham): Climax with demon effigy destruction, victory celebrations, community energy.

                  Start return drive south (via alternative scenic route if desired).

                    Day 10

                    Drive south through Upper Mustang villages back toward Kagbeni / Jomsom (2,700–2,800 m).

                      Day 11

                      Fly Jomsom-Pokhara.

                        Overnight: Hotel in PokharaMeals: B

                        Day 12

                        Fly Pokhara to Kathmandu. Evening explore Pashupatinath Temple and Boudhanath Stupa. Last minute shopping.
