Langtang Region

Langtang is the Himalayan valley closest to Kathmandu — a single day's drive to the trailhead, with no flight required. That accessibility, combined with far lighter trail traffic than Everest or Annapurna, makes it one of the best choices for travellers with a week to spare.

The walk follows the Langtang Khola up through forest into a broad glacial valley, with Langtang Lirung rising over 7,000 m to the north. At its head is Kyanjin Gompa, a monastery settlement with a small cheese factory, and above it the viewpoints of Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri — a straightforward climb for one of the widest mountain panoramas in the country.

The valley was hit hard by the 2015 earthquake and has been rebuilt by its Tamang communities; walking here now directly supports that recovery.
