Overview

Bhutan the country of thunder dragon and happiness measures its success in Gross National Happiness, caps its visitor numbers, and keeps two-thirds of the country under forest — the only carbon-negative nation on earth. Travel here feels different: unhurried, uncrowded, and everywhere threaded with living Buddhist culture.

The classic journey runs through the western valleys — Paro, Thimphu and Punakha — between dzongs the size of citadels, farmhouse dinners and prayer-wheel villages, finishing with the walk up to Taktshang, the Tiger's Nest, pinned to its cliff 900 m above the valley floor.

Western Bhutan-The Classic Circuit

Home of the international airport, the National Museum, and Bhutan's most famous image: Taktshang, the Tiger's Nest monastery, reached by a half-day walk through blue pine and rhododendron to a cliff ledge 900 m above the valley.
