Sagarmatha National Park

Everest, Base Camp and the high passes, through Sherpa villages and monasteries above the Dudh Koshi.

The region

The Khumbu is the valley the world pictures when it thinks of Nepal: Everest at its head, the Dudh Koshi running out of it, and a network of trails linking Sherpa villages that have hosted travellers for generations. Most journeys begin with the short, famously dramatic flight into Lukla, then climb steadily through pine and rhododendron forest to Namche Bazaar — the trading town that acts as the region's hub and its first acclimatisation stop.

Everest is the headline, but the walking is what people remember: suspension bridges strung with prayer flags, the monastery at Tengboche facing Ama Dablam, yak trains on the trail, and the slow shift from forest to moraine as the air thins. Altitude sets the rhythm — a well-built Khumbu itinerary is defined as much by its rest days as its walking days.

Beyond the classic Base Camp route, the region opens into the Gokyo lakes, the Three Passes circuit, and quieter side valleys like Thame and Phortse where far fewer trekkers go.
